The set of the sails ...

The set of the sails ...

I dreamed I was...

"I dreamed I was walking alone" est originellement une chanson. D'une qualité musicale que, personnellement, je trouve très discutable. Je préfère proposer à la seule lecture ce texte intelligent, de très belle facture au plan rhétorique.

Oh I dreamed I was walking alone

  In a city of sadness,

And I wandered thro' deserts of stone,

  In a jungle of drabness.

I saw children in rows were reciting the rules,

And the railings were high that surrounded the schools,

And I knew that it wasn't a dream,

Slabs of stone where the grass should have been.

And the walls were a wilderness high,

And the sun was in hiding,

And the towers were tearing the sky,

Where the smoke clouds were writhing,

And the God of the city had iron jaws,

A ragged monster with jagged claws,

And I knew that it wasn't a dream,

Smoke and dust where the heart should have been.

In the markets where daydreams were sold

  The blind men were masters,

Turning all that they touched into gold,

  The blind men were masters.

I saw a million doorways and a million rooms,

A million mourners and a million tombs,

  And I knew it wasn't a dream,

A million masks where the faces should have been.

Then at last the sun shone in my dream,

  And toppled each tower,

There where the stone slabs had been,

  The earth was in flower.

And the iron bars melted every one,

The stone walls quivered and cracked in the sun,

And I saw that it couldn't have been,

And I knew it was only a dream.
